The Samskip Endeavour, a containership that carries over 800 containers and normally runs on a combination of fossil fuels, was bunkered with hydrotreated vegetable oil as part of the Goodshipping Program, a global marine initiative that aims to change the fuel that is used in the marine market space.
Shippers interested in reducing pollution at sea are encouraged to join the program and cut the environmental footprint of their shipments by arranging for a switch to biofuels on vessels carrying their goods.
Based on the level of freight volume, a scenario is agreed upon with the program developers on the corresponding amount of biofuel needed to replace the HSFO that would otherwise be burnt on a designated vessel. Goodshipping is in charge of the entire coordination process that results in a selected vessel refueling with biofuels in a selected port.
In cooperation with Samskip and GoodFuels Marine, Samskip Endeavor made the first ever fossil-free ocean freight transport for Godshipping’s clients.
Namely, GoodFuels Marine has provided 22,000 litres of vegetable oil made from used cooking oil to the vessel for the first cargo owners joining the initiative: Tony’s Chocolonely, Dopper, Blygold, Magic Marine and Mystic.
“Together we have avoided over 40 tons of CO2 emissions and, because our biofuels replaced Heavy Fuel Oil, we also significantly reduced other local emissions like sulphur, soot and black carbon,” Goodshipping Program said announcing the project.
“With this first bunkering, GoodShipping shows that it is possible for cargo owners to influence the carbon footprint of the sea freight in their supply chain. Thanks to the principle of mass balance, any company can join our program and have their sea freight shipped climate-neutral. Next to that, we are increasing demand and accelerating R&D in the field of marine biofuels.”
